Fred was born in Eriswell (Mildenhall Q4-1879 4A:601) 5th of 6 sons of William and Maria E. BRUNNING (née SAYER) 1881 census...Aged 1, Fred was living at the Shepherds House, Lords Lane, Eriswell with his father, William BRUNNING [45] a shepherd, born Icklingham; his mother Maria E [39] born Brandon; sisters Susan [16] and Martha [13] both born in Brandon; brothers George W [11], James [9] and William [7] all born in Weeting and brother Arthur [4] born Eriswell. 1891 census...Aged 11, Fred was still at Shepherds House with his parents, sister Martha, brothers George (now a warrener), James, a shepherd, John ( a shepherd's help), Arthur and a new brother Edgar 8, born in Eriswell. 1901 census...Aged 21, Fred was an agricultural labourer, living near the Rectory with his parents (father now retired), sister Martha, brothers James (shepherd), Arthur (bricklayer's labourer)and Edgar (agricultural labourer). 1911 census... Aged 31, Fred, a road labourer, was living at 64 Eriswell with his widower father, sister Martha, brothers George (warrener/gamekeeper), Arthur (private gardener) and Edgar (shepherd). No children are recorded as dying but his mother had died in 1910. His father died late in 1915. |

Without his Army records we cannot say where or when he was wounded, but the 7th Suffolks were in trenches close to Pozieres early in August 1916 . On the 8th August the Germans took Ration Trench, but that evening the Suffolks recaptured it and gained 200 yards. The Suffolks had 42 killed on the 8th but only 5 of the 7th battalion on the 9th Dying of his wounds and yet having no known grave may mean his original grave was lost in later fighting or that his body was never recovered. The Bury Free Press of 2nd September 1916 reported that:- ERISWELL MEN WOUNDED Miss Brunning, sister of Prvt Fred Brunning, Suffolk Regiment, on Saturday received an official notification informing her that her brother was seriously wounded in action. He is the fifth son of the late Mr William Brunning....... and a further article in the 11th November edition of the same newspaper:- INFORMATION WANTED OF ERISWELL SOLDIER Miss Brunning of Eriswell, received an official notidfication on August 26th to the effect that her brother, Prvt Frederick Brunning (26652), 7th Suffolk Regiment, was reported missing. A further similar notification has been received. Any comrade reading this report who is able to furnish Miss Brunning with any information of her brother will receive her's and the family's grateful thanks. |
